Verbs are words used to express action or a state of being.
Helping and Main Verbs
Helping verbs are used as part of a verb phrase with a main verb.
Commonly Used Helping Verbs
Examples:
Linking and Action Verbs
Linking verbs connect the subject to a word group that identifies or describes the subject.
Action verbs express physical or mental activity.

- Forms of Be: am been was were being is are be
- Forms of Do: do does did
- Forms of Have: had has have
- Other Helping Verbs: can might should could must will may shall would
Examples:
- John will conduct many outstanding orchestras. [Verb phrase: will conduct ]
- He has been praised for his fine conducting. [Verb phrase:____ ]
- His recordings should be heard by anyone interested in classical music. [Verb phrase:___ ]
- He will be leading the orchestra tonight. [Verb phrase:___ ]

Assignments
- Read about verbs and complete exercises 1, 2, and 3 on pages 97-102 in your Elements of Literature textbook.
- Use action verbs in your own writing by completing an essay about one of your most memorable athletic experiences. To get full credit for your essay, you must:
- Write about an athletic experience. This can be about school/community sports, gym class, horseback riding, ATV/dirt bike riding, paintball, summer camp games, and more.
- Write three paragraphs with five sentences in each paragraph.
- Use as many action verbs as possible. Try to avoid overuse of the be words.
