Step Up to Writing!
Remember, one of the biggest requirements to scoring a 5 in Ideas on the 6+1 Traits rubric is to include relevant, specific details to support your main topic. Today, we will be using the Step Up to Writing paragraph model to help us include specific, relevant details in our writing.
Imagine a traffic light when you are writing a paragraph. Your first sentence of every paragraph tells you to GO and start writing. Your next sentence should SLOW DOWN and give a reason, detail, or fact about your topic sentence. Then, you will need to STOP and explain your reason more fully. Give a specific example. After you have explained each reason or fact about your topic sentence, you need to end your paragraph with one final sentence that GOES BACK and reminds the reader what you talked about. |
Example:
Fall is my favorite season of the year. I enjoy walking outside during fall, watching football, and viewing the beautiful scenery. Walking outside is great exercise and the cooler weather in fall makes it a much more enjoyable experience. Because the weather is cooler, you can walk for a longer distance without getting too hot or too tired. Also, I greatly enjoy attending high school football games during the fall. The level of school spirit on Friday nights is absolutely addicting! It is exciting to watch your favorite team win over the rival team. Finally, the beautiful scenery of fall leaves changing colors and cascading over the mountains' forests is absolutely breathtaking. I love to observe the many shades of red, orange, and yellow that conquer each tree. All in all, walking, football, and the beautiful scenery are three excellent reasons why fall is the best time of the year.
Class Assignments (2)
1. Using the Step Up to Writing paragraph model, please take one of the above paragraphs from the "Language Arts" essay and rewrite it to include at least 8 sentences. Make sure your GO and GO BACK sentences are written in green, your SLOW DOWN sentences are yellow, and your STOP sentences are written in red. You may use the Skitch app on your iPads to write in different colors or you may use markers or crayons on a piece of paper. (If you use Skitch, please send me your final picture through Engrade.)
2. Go back to your Optimism vs. Pessimism essay from Tuesday. Revise and edit your ideas so that each paragraph is written using the Step Up to Writing paragraph model. Your responses must be handwritten and each sentence of each body paragraph must be underlined in green, yellow, or red according to where the sentence occurs in the paragraph. If you do not finish all three of your body paragraphs during class, your assignment becomes homework. All paragraphs will be checked and graded tomorrow, 8/19, at the beginning of class.
